Shireen

Enigmatic Witchrock from the Netherlands

Following their debut EP in 2014 and the release of the single 'UMAI' in 2016, the Dutch band Shireen has proudly presented their long-awaited, first full-length album: 'MATRIARCH'. Recently the band has introduced new members (and new instruments) to their line-up, and they are working on a second album which will feature heavier and darker sounds. Witchrock is a new musical genre that blends folk, pop and sturdy rock with electronic samples and beats: a raw, energetic sound to carry vocalist Annicke Shireen's enthralling voice. Inspirations include artists such Björk, Tool, Leprous, and Kate Bush.

MATRIARCH deals with themes of personal exploration, the strength of our emotions, femininity, divinity, our beauty and our crudeness, and asks what it is that makes us human, and what makes us more than that. The album contains twelve unique Witchpop songs and is produced by Fieke van den Hurk | Dearworld studio. Three guest musicians line up to ameliorate the album: Daphyd Sens (Omnia, Thundercrow) on slideridoo, Evelyn Sies – van der Horst on vocals and musical saw, and Fieke van den Hurk is responsible for additional beats, drones and electronics. The album features artwork designed by Julia Filament and photography by Ork de Rooij.
